Presentation Title Surface Modification of Titanium by Physical and Chemical Routes for Hard Tissue Regeneration
Author(s) Sahar Vahabzadeh, Dexter Kling
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Sahar Vahabzadeh
Abstract Scope Surface modification of titanium (Ti) and its alloys is a common method to improve bone tissue formation and integration for orthopedic and craniomaxillofacial applications. In current work, we used combination of chemical and physical routes to roughen the surface and deposit iron (Fe) or magnesium (Mg) on the surface of titanium at different concentrations. Fe plays an important role in bone metabolism and remodeling, and is believed to enhance osteogenesis. Mg is also a key element in bone development and its deficiency is linked to low bone mass density. Our results show that surface modification by anodization or alkali treatment, alone or in combination with Fe and Mg alters cellular proliferation and differentiation in several systems including osteoblast and osteosarcoma cells. In addition, cellular response depends on oxygen concentration of the environment for each system. At last, the designed metallic implants can be used for drug delivery applications.
