Abstract Scope Advanced Ni alloys have been widely used for various high temperature applications. Here we present the additive manufacturing of Haynes 230 and IN 718 Ni alloys with nanoscale precipitates. Scanning electron microscopy studies identified well aligned arrays of carbide nanoprecipitates along dislocation cell walls in Haynes 230 alloys. Transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that carbide nanoprecipitates formed several aligned orientation relationships with the matrix. In comparison, oxide nanoprecipitates formed in the IN 718 Ni oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys. Furthermore, the presence of oxide nanoprecipitates has modified the residual stress in the 718 Ni alloys. In situ tension studies showed the oxide nanoprecipitates improved the high temperature properties of the 718 Ni alloys. These nanoprecipitates also changed the deformation mechanisms of Ni alloys. This study suggests that additive manufacturing may produce advanced alloys with nanoprecipitates for applications in extreme environments.
