Abstract Scope |
To optimize the performance of polycrystalline Ni-base superalloys, they are increasingly alloyed with solute elements such as Cr to improve oxidation resistance, as well as W and Mo to improve creep properties. However, these elements often lead to the formation of an undesired topologically close-packed σ-phase. Most of the studies reported so far on this subject, investigated industrial alloys with a small amount of σ-phase (e.g., 1-2 %) that do not allow to know the amount of σ-phase that can be tolerated for specific applications. For that reason, the current work investigates an alloy with up to 12 vol.% σ-phase at 900 °C. A sequence of multiple heat treatments was successfully applied to establish two microstructural states with similar γ/γ’-microstructure but different σ-phase volume fractions. These model microstructures enable to investigate the impact of the σ-phase on high-temperature mechanical properties. |
