Presentation Title A Perspective on Serial Sectioning Technology
Author(s) Michael D. Uchic
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Michael D. Uchic
Abstract Scope Despite their simplicity, serial sectioning experiments are deceptively challenging to execute flawlessly on a routine basis because of the many factors that can influence preparation and collection processes, whilst having to maintain this consistency for potentially weeks or months. This talk will focus on research to develop and utilize custom automated systems that use multi-modal microscopy and mechanical polishing based instrumentation to address measurement challenges with accurate, quantitative microstructural characterization at relevant length scales in a diverse suite of engineering materials. Topics will include incorporation of in-cycle data analysis for quality assurance and completion of experimental objectives, efficient experimentation strategies, exploration of parallelized sample preparation devices, and example measurement applications.
