Abstract Scope Tandem configuration of a dye-sensitized solar cell and redox flow battery leads to direct conversion of solar energy to electrochemical energy. Modulating the make-up of photoelectrode composite materials permits optimal utilization of the solar spectrum for photoelectrochemical generation leading to a clean and an abundant energy source. Given this, the performance of a tandem device and its individual components, are evaluated using steady-state and time resolved spectroscopic methods, as well as, electrochemical measurements and performance testing. Careful analysis of the results allows for conclusions to be made about how to judiciously design the device and its active components for maximum performance.
