Presentation Title Microstructure and Mechanical Effects of Inter-layer Machine Hammer Peening on Wire Arc Additively Manufactured Nickel Superalloys
Author(s) James E. German
On-Site Speaker (Planned) James E. German
Abstract Scope Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) provides rapid and flexible manufacturing capabilities while reducing material waste of expensive superalloys. The WAAM process can result in elemental segregation and columnar dendritic microstructures, reducing material performance. Interlayer cold working would promote grain refinement through heterogenous nucleation and can improve deposit properties. In this research inter-layer machine hammer peening was applied to several plasma arc welded nickel superalloys, including Inconel 718, Haynes 282, and Haynes 233. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the materials, both heat-treated and as-deposited, were compared. Hardness results of peened samples were increased, with tensile properties expected to approach wrought values when combined with age hardening heat treatment.
