Presentation Title Through-thickness Heterogeneity in the Mechanical Properties of Hot Rolled AA7075-T651

Abstract Scope The evolution of the microstructure and mechanical properties of a 32 mm thick hot rolled AA7075 plate specimen in T651 temper condition was investigated with the aim of understanding the qualitative and quantitative contribution of precipitate phases. Mechanical properties measured with the aid of ex-situ micromechanical and hardness test showed a non-parabolic through-thickness heterogenous trend in the yield and tensile strength with respect to depth from the surface to the midplane of the specimen. The size and distribution of the microscale (>50 nm) and nanoscale (<20 nm) precipitate distribution was studied quantitatively in detail by a combination of large area scanning electron microscopy (SEM) containing 99 images and HFW of 416 um and small angle x-ray scattering technique (SAXS) at four different depths. The variability in the distribution of the precipitate phases was established to be the driving force for the through-thickness heterogeneity.
