||Extraction of Scandium from Bauxite Residue in silica gel-free systems

Bauxite residue (BR) has considerable content not only in major elements such as Al, Fe, and Ti but in some cases it is also relatively rich in Sc. The acid leach of BR however, is usually hindered by the massive dissolution of Si leading to silica gel. In this study, different approaches for bauxite residue leaching are examined for silica gel-free Scandium extraction in 4 different BR samples. Leaching experiments using sulphuric acid are studied and compared at intensive leaching conditions where high leaching yields of Sc are achieved, without silica gel formation but with co-dissolution of all major element. Mild leaching conditions with lower leaching yields but higher Sc selectivity are also studied. Finally, a novel approach for bauxite residue leaching is compared to the conventional mineral acid leaching using the ionic liquid HbetTf2N, where silica, iron and Titanium oxides’ dissolution is minimal.
