Presentation Title Interfacial Strength in Microparticle Impact-Induced Bonding

Abstract Scope High velocity impact of micrometer sized metallic particles upon metallic substrates can result in solid-state bonding with significant microstructural evolution at the interface. The short time scales of impact, ~100 ns, together with the small length scale, ~10 Ám make systematic studies of the process-microstructure-property relationships challenging. Here we use two in-situ approaches to address this challenge. First, we use laser-induced projectile impact testing and high-speed imaging to observe the impact-bonding process in real time. We make bonded particles with precisely measured impact velocities and pre-impact particle sizes. We will then use a micromechanical testing stage inside an electron microscope to measure the interfacial strength at the microscale while observing the failure mode. The two real time imaging approaches enable us to develop correlations between impact velocity, particle size, and interfacial strength.
