Presentation Title Open Circuit Potential Measurements of Select Noble Metals in LiCl-KCl Eutectic Salt

Abstract Scope The corrosion characteristics of materials of construction that are in contact with molten salts are influenced by the chemical stabilities of the metals in the alloys relative to the metal cations in the salt. The open circuit potentials of a metal electrode (relative to a Ag/AgCl reference electrode) were measured as functions of temperature and the concentration of its chloride in the salt. Systems studied include: Fe/FeCl2, Mn/MnCl2, Cr/CrCl2, Mo/MoCl2. These are the primary alloy metals in 2.25%-Cr, 1%-Mo, ASME 287 steel, which is used in the construction of the Mk-IV and Mk-V electrorefiner vessels at the Idaho National Laboratory.
