Scope |
Sustainable manufacturing has become a critical focus area in materials science and engineering, as we strive to address pressing global issues, such as the depletion of natural resources, environmental degradation, and energy sustainability challenges. This symposium will explore innovative approaches to sustainability in the manufacturing of metals, ceramics, and composites, with an emphasis on material and technology development, recycling, waste reduction, resource and energy efficiency. By integrating advanced technologies, circularity principles, and novel materials development, and building upon existing standards, we can create pathways toward more sustainable manufacturing practices. Topics of interest include the development of resource- and energy-efficient processing strategies, scalable recycling techniques, and the design of materials for end-of-life recovery and reuse. Through collaborative discussion, a combination of perspectives from academia, industry and research labs, and the sharing of cutting-edge research, this symposium aims to advance sustainable practices that balance viability with environmental and socioeconomical responsibility.
Topics of interest include:
• Materials engineered for enhanced recyclability or biodegradability.
• Advanced recycling methods for metals, ceramics and composites, and lifecycle analysis of recycled materials.
• Technologies for closed-loop material recovery and reuse.
• Development of high-performance materials using waste or secondary resources.
• Novel energy-saving techniques in metal, ceramic, and composite fabrication.
• Zero-waste manufacturing processes for advanced materials.
• Advanced and additive manufacturing approaches to reduce material usage and energy consumption.
• Process optimization to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
• Nature-inspired processes.
• Digital twins and AI in optimizing sustainable manufacturing processes.
• Advances in green chemistry for material synthesis.
• Connecting the environmental and the socioeconomic sustainability pillars. |
