| Scope |
Scandium is a high-impact alloying element in aluminum, enhancing several properties across various aluminum alloy systems. However, the use of aluminum-scandium alloys has been limited to low-volume, specialized applications due to the high cost of scandium. New sources of scandium are emerging, including extraction from new mines, red mud, nickel ores, and as a by-product of titanium pigment and slag production, which could potentially lower costs. This symposium invites papers on scandium extraction and its use in aluminum alloy systems, as well as papers on the metallurgy of aluminum-scandium alloys and their applications.
Session topics will include:
• Scandium extraction from by-products (joint session with the “Name of EPD Symposium”)
• Aluminum-scandium alloys (joint session with the Aluminum Alloys Symposium)
• Aluminum-scandium alloys in additive manufacturing
• Master alloy production
