Symposium Sustainability in Light Metals Processing
Sponsorship
Organizer(s) Samuel Wagstaff, Oculatus Consulting
Scope The increasing global demand for light metals necessitates a focus on sustainable processing methods to minimize environmental impact and enhance circularity. This symposium will explore critical challenges and advancements in sustainability within light metals processing, emphasizing emissions control, waste management, and alloy design for recyclability.

Key topics include:

Emissions Control & Remediation: Strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants from primary and secondary metal processing, including carbon capture technologies and energy-efficient furnace designs.
Processing & Handling of Waste Products: Innovations in waste minimization and byproduct utilization, addressing dross, slag, and other residual materials.
Sorting & Handling of Scrap: Advances in automated scrap sorting, contamination mitigation, and improved handling techniques to maximize recovery and reduce material loss.
Alloy Design for Circularity: Development of alloys optimized for recycling, reducing reliance on primary raw materials while maintaining performance standards.
This symposium will bring together industry experts, researchers, and policymakers to discuss sustainable solutions that drive efficiency and environmental responsibility in light metals processing. Through technical presentations and collaborative discussions, participants will gain valuable insights into advancing a circular economy for the industry.

We invite contributions from academia and industry to foster innovation in sustainable metal processing.

Note regarding publication: Authors seeking an oral presentation opportunity must submit a manuscript for the Light Metals proceedings or be accepted for publication in a TMS journal. Authors seeking a poster presentation are not required to publish a paper, which would be an exceptional case taken by the symposium chair.
