Symposium Material Recycling and Upcycling

Scope Upcycling is the process of converting by-products and waste into useful materials, potentially with enhanced properties. Advances in upcycling and recycling offer a means of transforming the immense amount of waste produced by humans into an accessible and sustainable resource while simultaneously mitigating major ecological issues. This makes developments in any aspect of the upcycling and recycling of materials crucial for the preservation of the planet and continued advancement of society. This symposium is dedicated to discussing modern innovations in the recycling and upcycling of materials, including advances in material sources, extraction methodologies, processing techniques, and applications. Candidates for upcycling typically include polymers, metals, and ceramics, with recent special interest in geopolymers.

Specific subjects of interest for this symposium include, but are not limited to:

General advances relating to the upcycling of materials, e.g., polymers, metals, geopolymers, glasses, ceramics, and gasses
Development of material extraction processes from various sources including industrial, consumer, and electronic waste, natural resources, and mining waste
Innovations in processes and techniques for upcycling, e.g., additive manufacturing, catalytic upcycling, chemical upcycling, and mechanical recycling
Methods for enhancing relevant material properties during upcycling
Expanding the applications of upcycled materials to photovoltaics, thermoelectrics, structural materials, energy storage, etc.
Application of ICME and machine learning to the discovery and design of upcycling processes and materials
