Scope Undergraduate students in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) often have questions about where their degree can take them—and how to get there. This symposium, brought to you by Keramos and PCSA, is designed to provide a clear, informative, and engaging overview of the wide range of career trajectories available to materials scientists, including opportunities in industry, national laboratories, graduate school, and government agencies.

The session will begin with a series of short presentations from professionals in each of these sectors. These talks will offer insight into day-to-day responsibilities, work environments, typical degree and skill requirements, and potential career progression. Speakers will also share their personal journeys, highlighting the diverse paths a materials science degree can support.
In addition to post-graduation options, the symposium will provide undergraduate students with actionable information about experiences they can pursue during their academic careers to prepare for the future. These include internships, co-operative education programs (co-ops), and undergraduate research experiences (UREs), with guidance on how to find and apply for these opportunities.
Following the initial talks, a moderated panel discussion will allow students to ask questions and receive advice tailored to common concerns—such as choosing between graduate school and industry, building a competitive resume, or navigating the first few years after graduation.
