Symposium Shaping the Future of Material Science Leadership in Industry
Sponsorship
Organizer(s) Randy S. Beals, Magna International
Diran Apelian, University of California Irvine
Scope A discussion on how academic experiences and training in materials science have played a pivotal role in shaping the leadership skills of emerging leaders in the industry. The session can highlight real-world applications of academic knowledge, the transition from academia to industry, and the development of leadership qualities in the field.

The main idea would be an immersive half-day conference experience with industrial perspective. Combining the one-hour all conference keynote speech, two-hour LMD plenary session and finishing with one-hour networking workshop (industry sponsor) on Tuesday.

Pending on all conference approval the contingency plan would be to have the two-hour LMD plenary session as shown below on Monday AM.

Either say the main goal will be to increase industrial participation at TMS 2026.

LMD Plenary Session (2 hours)
Opening Remarks (5–10 minutes): A brief introduction to the session's purpose and importance. Again, provide context on how academic backgrounds contribute to leadership roles in the materials science field.

Three to Four Presentations (15 minutes each): Invite up to four speakers who represent industry and have demonstrated leadership in their respective careers. Speakers are new leaders in materials science, perhaps people who have recently taken on leadership roles or have made significant impacts in their organizations (e.g., VP of Materials Engineering, Chief Technology Officers, etc.) and/or founders of materials science-related startups, especially those founded by recent graduates or young professionals.

Each speaker should:
• Share their academic journey (e.g., education, key research projects, mentors).
• Discuss how their academic experiences helped them transition into leadership roles in the industry.
• Offer practical insights into how materials science education influenced their decision-making and innovation within their industrial organizations.

Panel Discussion (20–30 minutes): LMD plenary speakers will engage in a deeper conversation about the leadership journey in industry, addressing audience questions from keynote session and sharing additional insights.

Interactive Q&A (20–30 minutes): The audience will engage directly with the speakers. Facilitated by a moderator and/or open floor for questions, offering the opportunity for further discussion on how academic backgrounds influence leadership in industry and how the next generation of leaders can build on these foundations.
