Fused filament fabrication (FFF) offers a low-cost, accessible route for producing metal components; however, the influence of post-processing on the magnetic properties of precipitation-hardening stainless steels remains poorly understood. This study investigates the microstructural and magnetic behavior of 17-4 PH stainless steel fabricated by FFF and subjected to standard aging treatments. Following debinding and sintering, specimens exhibited approximately 17–20% linear shrinkage while retaining dimensional integrity without significant distortion. X-ray diffraction revealed a predominantly martensitic microstructure, while scanning electron microscopy identified 5–15 vol.% residual porosity. Vibrating sample magnetometry showed soft ferromagnetic behavior in the as-sintered condition, with an average coercivity of 5.6 Oe and saturation magnetization of 153 emu/g. Heat treatment significantly increased coercivity, reaching approximately 44 Oe following H900 aging. Ongoing work extends this study to laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) to compare the effects of rapid solidification and near-full-density processing on the resulting magnetic response and microstructural evolution. |
