Chemical short-range order (CSRO) has been found in high entropy alloys (HEA) and it has been argued to be one of the reasons for their superior radiation resistance and mechanical response. However, studies regarding the existence of CSRO and its impact on material properties in high entropy carbides (HECs) are rare. In this study, we report the first direct and indirect observation of CSRO using high resolution scanning transmission microscopy (HR-STEM) and 4D-STEM in both (NbTiVZr)C and (NbTiVMo)C. The extent of CSRO has been shown to be impacted by thermal treatment and samples with different amount of CSRO allowed us to isolate the effects of chemistry from CSRO. Our finding indicates that the CSRO in HECs can suppress the radiation induced lattice expansion and hardening, though this is not the only source for tuning radiation resistance of HECs. In addition, we found that our HECs samples become more ductile after irradiation. |
