| Abstract Scope |
Sonoprocessing is a dynamic process in which acoustic waves and energies are applied into different liquid media to enable and/or enhance chemical synthesis and materials processing. The processes often involve multiphase fluids consisting of mesoscale solid particles, liquid droplets and ultrasonic bubbles with different properties. The acoustic waves’ transmission, energy input and the dynamic interactions with these discrete phases govern the physical, mechanical and functional properties of the materials in processing as well as the transport/separation behaviors. In the past 15 years or so, we have used ultrafast optical, synchrotron X-ray and Megahertz free electron laser imaging to observe, in real-time and in operando conditions, the mesoscale dynamic interactions between ultrasonic waves/bubbles and the phases/particles of different materials. Here, we give a highlighted overview of the important phenomena discovered in real-time and operando conditions, which are critical and indispensable for understanding the fundamental physics as well as industrial implementation of sonoprocessing and optimization in different materials systems. |
