Abstract Scope Traditional battery recycling involves the usage or generation of hazardous chemicals. Furthermore, additional purification steps are required to recover valuable materials such as lithium, graphite and cathode active materials whilst the physical integrity of current collectors and separators is lost. We will present a novel process that relies on the Battery Recycling and Water Splitting (BRAWS) technology for full-value recovery of critical minerals and materials from battery waste streams using water as the only solvent. The BRAWS technology possesses both environmental and economic advantages, wherein lithium, graphite, cathode active materials, current collector and separator materials are recovered from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, without the requirement for acids and other toxic solvents. Moreover, the process yields green hydrogen as the byproduct. In the present study, the BRAWS technology has been implemented in end-of-life LCO, NMC and LFP batteries. The recovered products have been utilized to produce second-life lithium-ion batteries.
