| Abstract Scope |
Incorporation of sustainability practices in additive manufacturing (AM) processes has benefits well beyond environmental impact, offering improvements from logistics and supply chain readiness to financial and policy incentives. Here we discuss several successful advancements applied throughout the AM process positively affecting these areas. Metal feedstock powders are explored in terms of recovery, reclamation, and reuse, as well as development of powders optimized for highly efficient AM processing. Further aspects of AM processes will be explored, including sustainable carrier gas options, use of AI techniques to improve process efficiency, post-process optimization, and material and part design for end of life. Progress on these topics will contribute to the acceptance of sustainable AM practices in qualified materials processing. |
