Abstract Scope |
Reported here is work demonstrating the removal of thiophene from a model fuel solution by oxidative photocatalytic desulfurization with the Chevrel phase compound Ni2Mo6S8. Thiophene and its derivatives are the organosulfur compounds which are least efficiently removed from crude oil by industry-standard hydrodesulfurization processes, so targeting their removal from fossil fuels by industrial processing during refinement is critical for reducing uncontrolled SOx species emissions from burning fossil fuels. Spectroscopic results presented here illustrate the efficacy and reusability of Ni2Mo6S8 for the purpose of removing thiophene from the model fuel solution, and these are presented alongside a proposed mechanism for this process. Such processing on the industrial scale would allow the mass collection of the SOx species produced by the process, which can be post-processed into industrially useful elemental S. |
