| Abstract Scope |
"Hard Chrome" coatings deposited using hexavalent chromium precursors have been a mainstay in various industries for wear and corrosion protection (particularly of carbon steels) because of their hardness, smoothness and economics. However, many regulatory agencies have or are in the process of curtailing use of hard chrome from hexavalent precursors because they are very carcinogenic. Cold Sprayed metal/ceramic composites potentially offer numerous advantages over hard chrome coatings in light water reactors (LWRs). In addition to not containing hazardous materials, cold sprayed coatings potentially offer better sliding wear/fretting and corrosion resistance. This work provides data comparing mechanical/wear properties and corrosion resistance of hard chrome coatings with other plating techniques and cold spray. Cold spray shows good uniform microstructure with very low porosity and cracks, with hardness similar to hard chrome. For highly demanding applications over long service life, cold spray may be able to provide significant advantages over hard chrome. |
