This study evaluates the impulse excitation technique (IET) as a preliminary non-destructive tool for the dynamic characterization of hybrid composites reinforced with natural fibers. Epoxy laminates were manufactured in three configurations: carbon (C), sisal (S), and carbon/sisal hybrid (CS). The specimens were characterized using IET to determine their vibrational behavior, dynamic elastic modulus, and wave propagation velocity. The results established the dynamic performance limits of the composites, showing that the hybrid laminate exhibited intermediate properties, with a dynamic modulus of 30 GPa and a wave propagation velocity of 6488 m/s. These values indicate that the hybrid retained much of the stiffness provided by carbon fiber while reducing the prolonged resonant response associated with sisal. The findings demonstrate that IET is an effective screening technique for evaluating new hybrid formulations, enabling rapid assessment of the stiffness–damping balance and supporting the optimization of composite structures before more expensive and destructive mechanical testing. |
