Abstract Scope |
This study investigates the thermal performance of clay-based composites reinforced with polymer and biomass waste materials, an area that remains underexplored. Unlike conventional clay/polymer composites, where clay acts as a nanofiller, this research adopts an inverse approach, utilizing PET polymer and sawdust residues as fillers within a clay matrix. Composites were fabricated using hydraulic pressing at varying filler weight fractions (0.80 to 4.00 w.%), maintaining a total filler-to-matrix ratio of 40%. Results show thermal conductivity ranging from 2.70 × 10-5 to 3.92 × 10-5 W/mK for polymer clay (PC) samples and 3.02 × 10-5 to 4.33 × 10-5 W/mk for biomass-clay (BC) samples. Thermal expansion values ranged from 3.25% to 7.50% (PC) and 3.25% to 7.25% (BC). Overall, PC samples exhibited superior thermal performance, attributed to the insulating nature of PET fibres. These findings highlight the potential of waste-reinforced clay composites for use in energy-efficient and thermally comfortable building applications |
