| Abstract Scope |
Surface morphologies formed during molten salt corrosion of alloys often exhibit regular patterns and twin-like features, but the origin of these features remains unclear. In this work, we interpret such morphologies as the result of a dealloying-driven surface instability. By connecting surface observations with a linear stability analysis, we show that the characteristic pattern wavelength arises from the competition between selective dissolution and surface diffusion-mediated capillary smoothing. Using representative parameters for Ni–Cr alloys exposed to molten salts, the predicted wavelength falls in the micrometer range, consistent with experimental observations. This interpretation also explains the strong dependence of pattern modulation on salt chemistry and temperature. The results provide a theoretical basis for linking corrosion kinetics to emergent surface morphology. |
