Abstract Scope This study presents the synthesis of hydrogel beads for targeted drug delivery in liver cancer chemoembolization. GelMA, known for its excellent biocompatibility, was copolymerized with 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate (SPMA) via a water-in-oil emulsion polymerization method. A key feature of this design is the incorporation of anionic sulfonate groups from SPMA, which significantly facilitated rapid loading of the cationic drug, doxorubicin (DOX), via strong electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, to impart active steerability, amine-functionalized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were embedded within the hydrogel matrix. Comparative analysis demonstrated that amine functionalization of the SPIONs markedly enhanced the magnetic response of the beads relative to those containing pristine SPIONs, suggesting their potential for precise targeted chemoembolization.
