Abstract Scope |
Advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and generative design (GD) have rapidly impacted the manufacturing research ecosystem. In this talk, I explore the application of generative AI and GD on additive manufacturing (AM) from design, process planning, and process monitoring perspectives. Generative design has matured to the point where structural design problems are solved routinely and some thermal design capabilities have also been developed. More general GD approaches using generative AI are starting to emerge as well. AM process monitoring and defect detection capabilities have been demonstrated using advanced machine learning (ML) approaches. For process planning and detailed part design, ML-based surrogate models using convolutional neural networks enable fast (but approximate) process simulation capabilities. ML-based process selection and operation sequencing methods have become very accurate and are relevant to developing AM process chains. Critical research challenges and directions will highlight emerging opportunities at the AM research frontier. |
