| Abstract Scope |
Accurate constitutive models are critical for predictive simulation of additive friction stir deposition (AFSD), where extreme thermo-mechanical conditions govern material response. In this work, flow stress behavior of high strength aluminum alloys and stainless steels are characterized over a wide range of temperatures, strains, and strain rates using Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulation. The resulting dataset enables development of unified constitutive models that capture strain hardening, thermal softening, and rate sensitivity under process-relevant conditions. Model calibration is performed using established fitting methodologies, and validation is conducted against independent experimental datasets. The resulting material models are implemented within a smoothed particle hydrodynamics framework to simulate AFSD conditions. This presentation demonstrates a pathway to bridge laboratory-scale testing with process simulation, providing robust inputs for predicting deposition characteristics, material flow, and thermal histories in AFSD of aluminum and austenitic stainless steels. |
