Understanding and modeling behavior of fission products in molten salt reactor (MSR) environments is critical to advancing MSR technology.
This study presents a thermodynamic assessment of samarium-containing systems within the prototypical FLiNaK salt (LiF–NaF–KF). Differential scanning calorimetry was used to clarify phase equilibria in chemical systems LiF–SmF3, NaF–SmF3, and KF–SmF3, and relaxation calorimetry was used to pin key thermochemical properties, including entropy and heat capacity, for relevant intermediate compounds NaSmF4, KSmF4, and K2SmF5. Enthalpy of mixing for each pseudo-binary system was estimated through a correlative method based on the ionic size difference parameter.
The result of the present work is a set of self-consistent Gibbs free energy functions within the CALPHAD framework, which describe chemical interactions of SmF3 in molten FLiNaK environments. The resulting optimized thermodynamic models are slated for inclusion into the Molten Salt Database – Thermochemical (MSD-TC), a compendium of thermodynamic models for molten salts. |
