| Abstract Scope |
Metal matrix composites (MMCs) that combine lightweight metallic matrices with high-Z particles are promising materials for radiation shielding In this work, gas atomization with particle injection followed by cold-spray was developed to process the MMC. Several metal-particle combinations were explored, including Al6061-WC, Sn-WC, Al 6061-Bi2O3, and Al 6061-WO3. These systems were selected to evaluate the feasibility of introducing carbide and oxide particles into atomized metallic powder. The powders were characterized to assess powder morphology, particle attachment, and surface distribution. The results show that particle injection can successfully introduce nanoparticles into gas-atomized powders, although the incorporation behavior varies among WC-, Bi2O3-, and WO3-containing systems. Cold spray deposition of these MMC powders was further performed to evaluate their processability and the resulting coating microstructure. This study demonstrates a flexible processing route for developing composite powder feedstocks for advanced manufacturing and functional material applications. |
