| Abstract Scope |
Molten salt electrolysis is a promising method for fabricating high-temperature alloys, with temperature playing a critical role in the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrolytic reduction. In this study, an Nb-Si alloy was prepared by molten salt electrolysis using the Nb2O5-SiO2 oxides as a raw in a NaCl-CaCl2 molten salt system. The coupled reaction mechanism during electrolytic reduction was elucidated through thermodynamic analysis, and the effects of electrolysis temperature on the phase composition and microstructure of the alloy were systematically investigated by constant cell voltage electrolysis. The results indicate that Nb2O5 undergoes stepwise reduction, while the released oxygen ions react with unreduced Nb2O5 and SiO2 to form intermediate phases. The electrolysis products obtained at four temperatures consisted of the Nbss and Nb5Si3 phases. Increasing the electrolysis temperature promoted the formation of ordered phases and the precipitation of new phases, while the particle sizes of the products all reach the nanoscale. |
