| Abstract Scope |
The occurrence of anode spikes and their associated negative process impacts in aluminum electrolysis are well known. There are likely many contributing factors that drive their formation in industrial cells, ranging from operational practices to electrochemical mechanisms. Experimental work was done to validate potential fundamental mechanisms for the initiation of anode spikes by the electrochemical deposition of carbon on the anode surface. Various conditions and experimental setups in laboratory scale electrolysis cells were used to attempt anodic carbon deposition, including during electrolysis, and sub-electrolysis conditions with various anode geometries and current densities. After determining an operating regime where anodic carbon deposition would occur, additional tests were performed with switching from graphite anodes to ones made from pre-baked anode cores. The results of this work will be used to develop hypothesis for the underlying mechanisms occurring in industrial cells and potentially inform strategies for mitigating the formation of spikes. |
