| Abstract Scope |
Corrosion resistant metallic alloys, such as stainless steels, survive aggressive environments owing to their ability to form nanometer-scale, self-healing, protective passive oxide films. Historically, the compositional design of corrosion resistant alloys has been largely empirical. However, the emergence of more rigorous characterization and computational techniques have enabled new insights into the origins of passive film formation. In this talk, we will discuss how atomistic parameters like crystal structure, alloy content, and chemical short-range order (SRO) affect the aqueous passivation in simple alloys. We will present recent experimental results on primary passivation in simple alloys, a percolation model of passivation, and highlight the importance of SRO on percolation in binary alloy lattices generated using energies calculated from first-principles. This knowledge can be used to inform the design of the next generation of corrosion-resistant metallic alloys. |
