| Abstract Scope |
Subsurface defects formed during the fabrication in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can act as stress concentration points, leading to crack initiation and premature failure. Laser peening (LP) has the potential to mitigate the defects by imposing numerous pressure waves to the surface of LPBF-fabricated parts. In this study, LP was applied to LPBF-built Inconel 718 samples and changes in the area and normal diameter of defects were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Samples were further characterized pre- and post-LP by nanoindentation and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. SEM results showed 12.6 % and 22.6 % reduction in diameter and area respectively, indicating the suppression of defects post-LP. Additionally, nanoindentation increased 12.3 % post-LP to the depth of ~400 µm. EBSD results revealed enhanced KAM intensity post-LP suggesting increase in the density of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs), resulting in a hardened, densified subsurface region in LPBF-built Inconel 718 samples. |
