Abstract Scope |
The passivation mechanism of high-entropy alloys has been extensively studied due to the synergistic effect of multiple elements during the passivation process. The effect of Al addition on the passivation behavior of Alx(FeNiVTi)100-x alloys was investigated by combining with experiments and density functional theory. Higher Al concentration can improve the corrosion resistance of Alx(FeNiVTi)100-x alloys in neutral NaCl solution. TEM analysis shows that unexpected Ni-enrich subsurface was found underneath the passive film of FeNiVTi alloys, while Al addition could promote the passivation of Alx(FeNiVTi)100-x alloys by hindering Ni enrichment between the passive film and the substrate. Density functional theory calculations show that Al addition can reduce the electron work function in FeNiVTi alloys system, indicating a fast oxidation tendency of Alx(FeNiVTi)100-x alloys. This study will provide experimental and theoretical basis for the future design of new corrosion-resistant high-entropy alloys. |
