| Abstract Scope |
This exploratory work seeks to investigate the corrosive behavior of LiCl-KCl molten salt through controlled flowing corrosion experiments—representing realistic nuclear reactor environments. Unlike static exposure, fluid motion creates erosive corrosion behavior from species transportation and surface degradation. Conventional molten salt flow loops also introduce thermal gradients and mass deposition, complicating mechanistic interpretation. To isolate erosion-driven effects, a furnace with a corrosion-resistant crucible and feedthroughs will be integrated with a magnetically driven rotating electrode geometry, enabling sealed salt handling and contact-free motion transfer. Flow will be induced by rotating disc-shaped alloy samples to generate an angular velocity surface profile while limiting thermal gradients. Experiments will be conducted using a sparsified matrix spanning temperatures capturing the intergranular-to-transgranular transition and impurity conditions ranging from inert to highly corrosive. Post-exposure characterization will include large-area scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to generate mm-sized cross-sections for representative evaluation of surface degradation and corrosion mechanisms. |
