Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD) is the industry standard cathode materials for primarily alkaline and secondary Li-ion batteries. It offers several advantages such as purity, stability and high electrochemical performance. However, traditional EMD production depends on pyrometallurgical methods that release carbon dioxide and aerosol particulates that can negatively impact the air quality. In this study, we propose a hydrometallurgical process concept that maintains the leach environment within the desired acidity and redox parameters through active, close-loop control. In contrast to baseline approaches, where conditions drift during reaction, the controlled regime promotes enhanced surface reactions and higher extraction efficiency. Our results demonstrate faster reaction kinetics, and reduced reagent consumption, indicating a practical route toward a more energy efficient and sustainable manganese extraction pathway. |
