| Abstract Scope |
Implant-associated infections continue to pose a challenge for biomedical applications and are driving the development of metallic materials with inherent antibacterial properties. Silver-containing materials offer a promising approach; however, the limited mutual solubility between iron-based alloys and silver-based components constrains conventional manufacturing processes. Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) enables processing of such immiscible metallic systems under rapid solidification conditions. In this work, Fe–Ag-based multi-materials produced by LPBF are investigated concerning the influence of the silver-rich regions. A systematic parameter study is conducted to correlate the LPBF-parameters with the morphology, size, and distribution of the silver-rich regions. The resulting phase architecture is characterized using electron microscopy. Selected microstructural states are additionally evaluated through immersion tests to assess surface behaviour under simulated environmental conditions. The results contribute to the understanding of microstructure control in immiscible metallic systems for multifunctional applications in additive manufacturing. |
