| Abstract Scope |
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) Cathode Sealing Plant plays a critical role in pot repair operations by assembling cathode blocks and collector bars using liquid cast iron. Originally designed for limited cathode block configurations, the plant faced challenges in accommodating emerging cathode technologies with varying geometries and process requirements. This paper presents the optimization measures implemented to enhance the plant flexibility and operational efficiency for a wide range of cathode block technologies, including CD20, D20, D18+, DX, DX+, DX+ Ultra and EX. Key improvements include modifications to conveyor sensors and mechanical stoppers, repositioning of gantry units, optimization of clamping guide settings, and an increase in bar oven operating temperature to ensure effective cast iron penetration and bonding. Additionally, control system enhancements with dedicated HMI selections enabled rapid and error-free technology changeovers. These optimizations significantly improved process stability, adaptability and quality of casting by minimizing the rejections. |
