Abstract Scope |
Electrolytic production of Mn-alloys is the most direct way to electrify and decarbonize the Mn production process, by removing all direct emissions of CO2. In this work, a molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) process run at 1250-1400 °C with an oxygen evolving anode was investigated as an alternative CO2-free production process of liquid Mn or FeMn from Mn ores. A laboratory setup and model system with an electrolyte containing synthetic MnO, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, and CaO was used with an in-house produced CrFe-metal alloy anode. Both a consumable Fe-cathode and a non-consumable W electrode with cathodic current density of 2 A/cm2 gave stable operation and a cell voltage around 4-6 V. Producing an alloy with Fe appear to stabilize the produced Mn, as Mn was reacting also in the gas phase above the melt surface when using the W cathode in a vertical setup. |
