This study investigates the application of epoxy-based Smart Skins (SSs) for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in mechanical systems. Considering the limited literature on self-sensing epoxy composites applied to SHM of machine elements, this work aimed to investigate the effect of the smart skin embedding depth on the piezoresistive response of self-sensing skins applied to aluminium bars. SSs containing only conductive carbon black nanoparticles (CBN) and others containing CBN and sand in an epoxy matrix were embedded into aluminium bars at depths of 6 mm and 15 mm. Experimental evaluation was performed through piezoresistive tests under controlled operating conditions, measuring electrical resistivity and compressive strain. The results showed that the deepest embedding (15 mm) produced a stronger and more stable piezoresistive response than 6 mm, with the shallow depth combined with a sand-free composite yielding a noise-dominated, unreliable signal. Finite element strain estimates were consistent with the observed sensitivity. The proposed approach contributes to the development of low-cost and efficient sensing systems for mechanical engineering applications. |
