Metallic alloys used in aerospace and energy systems often experience extreme, high-rate loading where performance depends strongly on near-surface behavior rather than bulk strength alone. This study examines how surface oxides influence solid-state bonding during high-velocity microparticle impact. Using laser-induced particle impact testing (LIPIT), we identify the impact velocity at which particles transition from rebound to adhesion and quantify the extent of bonding at this onset condition. We show that bonding behavior is strongly correlated with oxide morphology, with surfaces containing more interconnected oxide structures requiring higher velocities to achieve adhesion and exhibiting reduced bonded area at onset. These results suggest that oxide connectivity plays a key role in regulating interfacial disruption and metal–metal contact during impact. Overall, this work highlights the importance of surface oxide structure in high-rate bonding processes and suggests that controlling oxide characteristics may be an effective pathway to improve impact-driven adhesion in extreme environments. |
