Micro-additions of Scandium to 5xxx aluminum alloys can provide a novel opportunity for control of microstructure in sheet products. This presentation provides a summary of research work at Chongqing University from 2021-2025 on the effects of Sc and Zr on the microstructure, mechanical and corrosion behavior of a 5182-base alloy. After extensive work to develop appropriate homogenization treatments for laboratory scale ingots, a series of alloys was fabricated to provide a range of recrystallized sheet microstructures. Unrecrystallized sheet was produced through careful control of the Al-Sc/Zr dispersoids. The impacts of the grain/subgrain structures on tensile deformation (PLC behavior) and intergranular corrosion behavior were investigated using high-resolution TEM. A high density of Al3(Sc,Zr) dispersoids inhibited serrated flow due to their pinning effects on dislocation motion. A reduction of intergranular corrosion in the Sc-containing alloys was attributed to the unrecrystallized microstructure and the precipitation of Al-Mg phases on the dispersoid/aluminum matrix interface, |
