| Abstract Scope |
Environmental barrier coatings (EBC) protect SiC composites from water vapour recession. Ytterbium silicate EBCs deposited via air plasma spraying have reported presence of secondary phases and amorphous content. Hence, an in-situ silicate formation approach was developed, wherein, a ytterbia top-coat was slurry sprayed on silicon bond coat substrate and reactive sintered in air to bring about reactions between silicon, atmospheric oxygen, and ytterbia. Two kinds of powder feedstocks (micro and nanoparticles) were used for depositing homogeneous topcoats. On reactive sintering the coatings at 1400 °C, YbDS and YbMS formed in the interface region as two separate layers, as confirmed with SEM-EDS and Raman spectroscopy. To gain insight into the mechanism for solid-solid reactive phase formation, the growth rates of silicates were analysed in terms of diffusivity and the rate of reactions. The performance of EBCs was evaluated by subjecting them to an oxyacetylene flame. |
