| Abstract Scope |
Understanding the influence of pulsed magnetic fields (PMFs) on solidification remains a central topic in metallurgy and materials science. This talk presents recent advances in real-time synchrotron X-ray studies of alloy solidification under PMFs at the Diamond Light Source and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The first case is the imaging and tomography of the growth and fragmentation of Al₃Ni phases in an Al–15%Ni alloy solidified under PMFs. The time-resolved 2D and 3D datasets showed unambiguously how the Al₃Ni phases branched out and grew into dendritic morphologies as the pulsed magnetic flux increased beyond the threshold value. The second case uses in situ 4D X-ray tomography to probe multiphase evolution during solidification of a high-Fe recycled Al–5Cu–1.5Fe–1Si alloy, providing insights into how PMFs facilitate aluminum recycling. The remaining challenges and future opportunities for synchrotron-based investigations of field-assisted solidification are also discussed. |
