Abstract Scope |
Ultrafast sintering has emerged as a transformative approach for rapidly densifying materials while significantly reducing processing time and energy consumption compared to conventional sintering methods. In this work, we report new induction ultrafast sintering (IUS) schemes capable of rapidly sintering materials through two modalities (i) direct induction sintering (d-IUS), where heating of the sample arises from direct coupling with the applied electromagnetic field, and (ii) susceptor-heating induction sintering (s-IUS), where the sample is decoupled from the applied electromagnetic field and heated via radiative and conductive heat transfer from a susceptor. We demonstrate the versatility of IUS by sintering molybdenum (Mo) and 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) to relative densities exceeding 93 % in 30 to 120 s, using heating rates ranging from 75 to 450 °C/s. The IUS platform showcases versatile ultrafast sintering of metallic and ceramic materials under ultrahigh heating rates in field coupled vs. decoupled configurations. |
