Abstract Scope |
Phase transformations play a pivotal role in materials science; in particular in the metallurgy of steel is complex due to the working temperature. Here we show how thermography is an accurate and non-contact method for thermal analysis. What is most, the microstructure refinement by means of liquid metal treatment can be monitored and predicted as well using thermography. Here we present a unique example for commercial thermite welds and treated using a custom mechanical vibration device. The identification of critical phase transition points and their changes with and without treatment are evident along with a clear correlation. Thermography is capable of monitoring phase transitions such as: melting, solidification, austenite, pearlite, bainite, etc. Here we show results of metallography, CT scanning porosity analysis, and mechanical properties and their correlation to thermal analysis. |
