| Abstract Scope |
Intrinsic stress generated during thin-film processing strongly influences grain-growth kinetics. To the best of our knowledge, the experimentally observed asymmetry in grain-growth kinetics under tensile and compressive intrinsic stress has not been reproduced by existing phase-field grain-growth models. We present a phase-field framework for simulating grain growth under prescribed intrinsic stress, in which grain-specific orientation-dependent strain energy serves as the driving force for microstructural evolution. The model successfully reproduces faster grain growth under compressive stress than under tensile stress, as well as the progressive reduction of this kinetic asymmetry during grain coarsening. These results demonstrate that the proposed framework captures the essential physics governing stress-driven grain growth and provides an efficient, physics-based tool for predicting microstructural evolution in polycrystalline thin films. |
