Abstract Scope |
Hot wire hybrid Directed Energy Deposition (DED) improves process performance by enhancing preheating of the feedstock, leading to increased deposition efficiency and thermal stability. A window of optimal process parameters can be identified through quantitative characterization of melt pool evolution and feedstock behavior under varying energy inputs. This study investigates the relationship between laser power, hot wire power, and melt pool geometries during the deposition of stainless steel 316L. Coaxial imaging is employed to quantify melt pool dimensions and monitor dynamic changes under different process conditions. Additionally, wire flutter during deposition is characterized and correlated to fluctuations in melt pool morphology, serving as a sensitive indicator of process instabilities. Preliminary results demonstrate that combined analysis of melt pool geometry and wire dynamics enables a comprehensive evaluation of process health, supporting the future development of advanced in-situ closed-loop control strategies |
